Traveling to Sierra Leone

If you are travelling to Sierra Leone or transiting through it, your passport, Identity card or Emergency Travelling Certificate will be checked at the border crossing point. This could be at the airport, a land border or a sea port. The same checks will be carried out if you are leaving the country.

What you need to travel to Sierra Leone

This depends on whether or not you are an ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) or non ECOWAS citizen.

  • If you are an ECOWAS citizen, no visa is required to travel to Sierra Leone. All that is required is a valid passport, an Identity card or an ETC to travel to or transit through Sierra Leone. The ECOWAS members countries are:
  • Benin
  • Burkina Faso
  • Cape Verde
  • Cote D’Ivoire
  • The Gambia
  • Ghana
  • Guinea
  • Guinea Bissau
  • Liberia
  • Mali
  • Niger
  • Nigeria
  • Senegal
  • Sierra Leone
  • Togo
  • If you are a non-ECOWAS citizen, you will require a visa in addition to a valid passport to travel to or transit through the country.
