The Sierra Leone Immigration Department (SLID) has officially unveiled new security uniforms for its personnel, designed to enhance identity, professionalism, and security.
In his address, the Chief Immigration Officer (CIO), Hon. Alusine Kanneh, emphasized that the unveiling of the uniforms represents more than a change in appearance—it symbolizes a transformation of the department’s identity. He noted, “These uniforms reflect a modern, professional, and dynamic Sierra Leone Immigration Department, equipped to address today’s challenges.”

He added that the uniforms are a symbol of honor, authority, and responsibility, serving as a reminder of the values, integrity, and vigilance expected of immigration officers in their duty to serve the nation. The CIO highlighted the vital role of the department as gatekeepers of Sierra Leone’s borders, tasked with safeguarding sovereignty, maintaining order at points of entry, and facilitating the smooth movement of people for economic growth and national development.
Hon. Kanneh outlined the progress made under his administration in modernizing the department. He shared that operational capacity has been enhanced, and officers have been equipped to deliver more efficient services. Administrative reforms have also been implemented to streamline operations, improve transparency, and reduce inefficiencies.
As part of ongoing improvements, he disclosed that the processing of passports will be decentralized by the end of November 2024. This initiative will include setting up passport processing facilities in three district headquarter towns: Kenema (Eastern region), Bo (Southern region), and Bombali (Northeastern region). Additionally, plans are underway to extend this service to Sierra Leone’s foreign missions in London, United Kingdom, and Washington D.C., United States.

The Secretary to the President, Dr. Emmanuel Gaima, spoke about the critical role of immigration in border management and national security. He described the unveiling of the uniforms as a step towards strengthening the department’s capacity to contribute to national peace and security. Dr. Gaima highlighted the importance of effective border management in maintaining national stability and fostering economic growth.
Delivering the keynote address on behalf of the Vice President, the Minister of Local Government, Tamba Lamina, noted that immigration officers serve as representatives of the nation to visitors. He emphasized that the uniforms, incorporating national symbols and badges, promote the country’s identity and values, leaving a positive impression on international visitors and reinforcing a strong national image.
