The Sierra Leone Immigration Department, under the leadership of Chief Immigration Officer Hon. Alusine Kanneh, has successfully concluded a transformative two-day induction ceremony for 115 newly recruited staff, held on July 11-12, 2024. This landmark event highlights a new chapter for the department, ushering in a fresh wave of talent to support its critical mission.

In his opening remarks, Hon. Kanneh warmly welcomed the recruits, emphasizing that this induction marked a pivotal moment not only for the recruits but also for the department’s evolution. Reflecting on his tenure since assuming office on August 3, 2023, he underscored the significance of integrating long-serving volunteers into permanent positions, a move aimed at recognizing their dedication and ensuring institutional continuity.
“We are thrilled to have you with us,” Hon. Kanneh stated. “You were chosen because of your exceptional skills, dedication, and commitment. Your contributions will be instrumental in safeguarding our nation’s borders, enforcing lawful entry, and upholding the principles of security and justice.”

Transforming the Workforce
The Chief Immigration Officer announced the absorption of 115 former volunteers into permanent and pensionable roles in the Sierra Leone Civil Service, lauding the Human Resource Management Office (HRMO) and its Director General for their pivotal support. This achievement underscores the department’s commitment to recognizing and formalizing the contributions of auxiliary staff, some of whom had volunteered for over a decade.
Hon. Kanneh reminded the recruits of their critical role, stating, “Your actions and decisions will shape lives and contribute to national safety and well-being. This responsibility demands integrity, empathy, and fairness, values that you will uphold as Immigration Assistants, Border Guards, or Office Assistants.”

Training for Excellence
The induction program was designed to equip recruits with comprehensive knowledge, from immigration laws and border procedures to the Civil Service Codes, Regulations, and Rules. Hon. Kanneh assured participants of a robust training curriculum that integrates technical proficiency with the human aspect of immigration service, fostering a culture of ethical conduct and professionalism.

Strategic Vision
Deputy Chief Immigration Officer Amadu Bah echoed the importance of this new chapter, urging recruits to seize the opportunity and contribute to the department’s strategic objectives. He outlined the institution’s priorities, including finalizing the national migration policy, enhancing core services, and digitalizing operations, particularly around resident permits.
“This is part of a larger effort to build capacity and drive progress,” said Mr. Bah. “With your addition to the team, we are one step closer to achieving these goals.”

Call to Action
The Director of Training and Career Development at HRMO, Mathew Beacon, encouraged the recruits to embrace the opportunity, perform to the highest standards, and familiarize themselves with civil service expectations. He emphasized the importance of ongoing learning and collaboration, urging them to actively engage in the orientation program and ask questions to build a strong foundation for their careers.
As the induction ceremony concluded, the recruits left inspired and equipped to begin their journey as vital members of the Immigration Department. This milestone not only reinforces the department’s commitment to excellence but also sets the stage for transformative growth and innovation in Sierra Leone’s immigration services.
